What better place to reflect and rejuvenate than the sacred heartland of the Navajo? The mind expands here to take in the grand vistas, absorb the infinite sky, and stand in silence with the primordial Earth. The eyes soak up the colors, rich in hue, vibrant and alive. The body feels the dry air, the soft sand below your feet, and the excitement of a new day casting its spell on the desert. I set up my tripod and prepare my camera for the magic about to unfold. Welcome to the wide-open spaces of Monument Valley.
First, the blush of color wakes up the eastern horizon with a hint of the majesty about to follow. The glow intensifies. The hovering, strands of clouds catch the intensity of the venerated orb about to be revealed as the Earth slowly rotates. A tiny spark appears. The light grows, then strikes us with sharp, bright intensity. But the clouds keep the window nearly closed, allowing only a portion of the sun’s hot, golden presence to shine forth. The warm light begins a slow dance with luminance and grace across the sandstone landscape.
Catch the light, says the photographer’s mind. Savor the moment, says the artist’s heart. Find balance. Compose. Activate the shutter. Preserve the feeling of past, present, future, present, past… all happening at once. Sacred moments are rare. Photography reminds me of this. Time after time. The past twelve months have been monumental. We now pass gratefully through this autumn season of thanksgiving, followed by sharing our gifts under the sparkle of the longest nights, into a new year—of wonder, appreciation, and awe.
