Workshop: Oregon Coast Treasures
October 14, 2021 - October 19, 2021

Our journey begins with photographing the magnificent fall color at the Portland Japanese Garden the first session, and then Multnomah Falls the following morning. The rest of the trip is exploring the glorious Oregon coastline riding in two luxury SUVs. The beaches are home to bonsai-like trees on sea stacks with reflective sandy beaches, geologic wonders, and working lighthouses—places that enliven your soul as you craft each new composition.
Thursday, October 14. Our workshop starts with an afternoon meet and greet at the hotel in Portland. Our first photo session is planned for the afternoon, and we load into luxury SUVs for a short drive to the Portland Japanese Garden. Here, a riot of fall color harmonizes perfectly with the Zen stillness. Gently moving water and reflections in the large pools set your mind free, inviting you to be creative. Sunset captures Portland city lights with Mount Hood on the horizon. Dinner at a famous craft brewery ends our day.
Friday, October 15. Rise and shine for a journey out to the majestic Multnomah Falls. It’s the tallest falls in Oregon. Visualize a ribbon of water cascading to an elevated pool. There sits a graceful little footbridge. Then, another plunge of falling water splashes into a lower pool. Autumn colors drape the cliffs, while slow shutter speeds make the falls look magical.
We drive to the coast to photograph the vast ocean meeting the shoreline. Our afternoon session sets up on sandy bluffs and overlooks. Then, the sunset session finds us walking the shoreline catching reflections of Haystack Rock on Cannon Beach.
Saturday, October 16. Welcome to a day of variety and excitement. A trip to the coast wouldn’t be complete with finding a glass float along the beach OR making your own. We’ll stop at Lincoln City Glass Center where each student can blow glass and make their own float. We’ll enjoy a seafood lunch. Then, head for our sunset shoot at the Heceta Lighthouse. En route, you’ll photograph more lighthouses and a geologic wonder tucked into the surf called Thor’s Well.
Sunday, October 17. After capturing beautiful sunrise photos of Heceta Lighthouse we head towards Brookings, a fishing village just north of the California border. Along the way, we explore Bandon for its seaside beauty. Heading further south, the coastline becomes even more sublime and rich with photography opportunities. Near Brookings, we’ll capture the alluring seascapes where bonsai-looking trees perch atop sea stacks. These geologic remnants rise magnificently out of the surf. We’ll be above or among the spectacular formations as the water takes on the colors of golden hour through sunset. After dinner, we jump into a Milky Way night photography session on the beach.Monday, October 18. A short hike at the break of dawn takes us down to a hidden beach for sunrise. The surf cascades through a tunnel in the rocks on one end of the beach. An overlook on the other end showcases sandy beaches with large breaking waves curving northward. A mid-day Lightroom/Photoshop session is followed by another spectacular sunset session on the coast.
Tuesday, October 19. Our final sunrise photo shoot of the trip! Here’s the chance to utilize everything you’ve been learning. You’ll be in-tune with your creativity and equipment cumulating from all our daily photo sessions. On our drive back to Portland, we will stop to photograph a nostalgic covered bridge. Our farewell dinner in Portland will end the workshop with clinking glasses and cheers for next year.
