Workshop: Spectacular Southwest Photography

Photograph the must-see sites of the American Southwest on a five-day workshop! You will capture images of beautiful Secret Canyon slot canyon, Monument Valley icons, Mystery Valley in the backcountry, awe-inspiring sunset and sunrise from Hunt’s Mesa, and the ancient ruins of Canyon de Chelly.
Sun, May 7: Our journey begins with a meet-and-greet dinner and orientation followed by a sunset shoot of iconic Cathedral Rock. Accommodations in Sedona and rental car for the workshop are your own responsibility.
Mon, May 8: We depart early for the 3-hour drive to Page. Take a private tour to photograph Secret Canyon, a stunning slot canyon, and then go to a private overlook on Navajo land of Horseshoe Bend. The tour is three hours long. Drive to Kayenta (2 hours). Photograph the majestic formations in Monument Valley concluding at the Mittens at sunset. Stay at Gouldings Lodge, dinner at the Stage Couch Dining Room.
Tue, May 9: Sunrise photo tour with our Navajo guide to photograph the sand dunes at the Totem Pole, then on to Eye of the Sun, Ear of the Wind, the famous Big Horn sheep petroglyph, and a Navajo sheep herder with her flock on a sand dune. Sunset photo tour with our Navajo guide to Tear Drop Arch, then Mystery Valley with sunset at the Pancakes. Stay at Gouldings Lodge.
Wed, May 10: Sunrise shoot of The Mittens from along Wildcat Trail. After lunch we take our Navajo-guided tour to the highlight of the trip—Hunts Mesa. The 4×4 drive takes two hours to the top of the mesa passing hair-raising cliff edges. Sunset photo shoot from the mesa looking down into Monument Valley. While we shoot sunset the guides will have set up our individual tents. Each tent is equipped with a cot, pad, sleeping bag, and pillow. Barbecue dinner is cooked over an open fire by our Navajo guides. Sleep overnight on Hunts Mesa.
Thur, May 11: Sunrise photo shoot from Hunts Mesa of Monument Valley below. Full breakfast and coffee cooked over the fire by our Navajo guides. Break camp and start down off the mesa. On way down we stop to photograph Spiderweb Arch. Lunch in Kayenta, then drive to Canyon de Chelly (1.5 hours). Navajo guided sunset tour including Antelope House ruin, rock art, and sunset at White House ruin. Stay at Thunderbird Lodge, dinner at the Lodge.
Fri, May 12: Sunrise photo shoot at Canyon de Chelly from the Canyon Junction overlook. Drive to Spider Rock for photos. Leave for Sedona with stops at historic Hubbell Trading Post, lunch at the La Posada in Winslow, visit Standing on the Corner (Eagles song), with a possible stop at Meteor Crater (cost not included, $23 adults, $21 over 60) before returning to Sedona. Accommodations are not included in Sedona.
Please note that you can share your room with a companion, at no added charge. Hunts Mesa trip will add $350 if you bring a companion. All other tours would be optional for an added charge.
Your rooms are already reserved and pre-paid at Goulding Lodge in Monument Valley for two nights, and Thunderbird Lodge at Canyon de Chelly for one night. The trip includes Secret Canyon slot canyon/Horseshoe Bend tour, three Navajo-guided tours at Monument Valley, and a Navajo-guided tour at Canyon de Chelly. Cost of all five tours, plus three nights of lodging is all included. Meals are not included except on Hunts Mesa where you will be served a hearty dinner and big breakfast.
